Chris Chalfant began apprenticing for her high school piano teacher in 1976
during his tours. She began her private studio in 1984 teaching piano, improvisation,
composition and music theory in Cambridge, MA. In New York Chris Chalfant
taught piano at the Brooklyn Conservatory and continues teaching privately
in Brooklyn and Manhattan today. Many students have stayed with her between
eight and sixteen years.
In the classroom Chris Chalfant taught music theory and Discovering
Improvisation at New England Conservatory in the Prep Department between
1988 and 1992. She also taught at Longy Music School in Cambridge, MA. In
New York she taught music and movement for pre-school children at Mannes,
Brooklyn Conservatory, Greenwich House, Turtle Bay, and Montessori between
1993 and 2001 where she wrote dozens of compositions for young children. She
also taught musical theater at Mannes and Brooklyn Conservatory.
Chris Chalfant has taught workshops for years in her private studio and for
conferences, seminars, retreats and residencies. Examples include the Dalcroze
Society of America, Music Teachers National Association, International Society
of Improvised Music, Music Omi International Residency and Brooklyn Buddhist
Association Sonic Meditations Retreat.
